As Alakh Pandey Steps Forward to Help, Tough Questions Arise for the Madhya Pradesh Government

By EX7 News Investigative Desk | Public Interest & Rural Development

Bhopal/Madhya Pradesh: A deeply disturbing viral video showing children climbing down into a deep well to fetch drinking water has sparked nationwide outrage and reignited concerns over the persistent drinking water crisis in rural Madhya Pradesh. The video, widely shared on social media, caught the attention of Physics Wallah founder Alakh Pandey (Alakh Sir), who publicly announced that he would help the affected village by arranging a well or borewell and extending free educational support to the children.

The humanitarian gesture has won widespread appreciation. However, it has also raised a more fundamental question: Why should private citizens be forced to perform duties that constitutionally belong to the government?

A Humanitarian Crisis, Not Just a Water Shortage

The visuals of children descending into a deep well for drinking water are more than a viral social media moment—they are evidence of a serious governance challenge. Every descent into an unprotected well exposes children to the risk of fatal falls, drowning, suffocation, and other accidents.

Access to safe drinking water is a basic necessity and an essential public service. When children are forced into life-threatening situations to collect water, it reflects a failure of infrastructure, planning, and timely implementation of rural water schemes.

Government Must Act Without Delay

The Madhya Pradesh Government should immediately:

  • Ensure safe drinking water reaches the affected village through emergency water supply.
  • Install a permanent borewell or piped drinking water system without further delay.
  • Conduct a district-wide survey to identify villages facing similar crises.
  • Hold officials accountable where drinking water schemes have failed or remain incomplete.
  • Ensure that no child is forced to risk life merely to collect drinking water.

Beyond One Village

Experts have repeatedly warned that climate variability, declining groundwater levels, delayed infrastructure projects, and poor maintenance of rural water systems continue to leave many villages vulnerable during summer months. A lasting solution requires sustained investment, transparent monitoring, and timely implementation of rural drinking water programmes.

Editorial Note

While Alakh Pandey’s intervention demonstrates commendable social responsibility, access to safe drinking water should never depend on philanthropy or viral videos. It is the responsibility of the State to guarantee every citizen—especially every child—the right to safe drinking water and a life of dignity.

EX7 News urges the Madhya Pradesh Government to treat this incident as an emergency, identify the affected village, provide immediate relief, and ensure that no child in the state is ever again forced to descend into a dangerous well in search of water.
