Three Deaths in Less Than 24 Hours: Are Nashik’s Roads Becoming a Public Safety Crisis?

Nashik, Maharashtra: As Maharashtra welcomed Lord Ganesha with devotion and celebration, three families in Nashik were mourning the loss of their loved ones. Within approximately 24 hours, three separate road accidents claimed the lives of three earning members at different locations in the city, raising serious questions about road safety, infrastructure management, and public accountability.

According to publicly reported information, the first incident occurred on Dindori Road near the Bajaj Showroom, where Santosh Shivaji Gangurde (30) suffered fatal injuries after an accident involving an ST bus. A second fatal accident was reported on Dindori Road near Tarwala Nagar Signal, opposite Mahavir Hotel, where Kailas Shankar Rokade (42) lost his life following a collision with an unidentified vehicle. The third incident occurred on Gangapur Road at Siddharth Nagar, where Siddharth Dattatraya Gore (33) reportedly died after his motorcycle struck iron pipes allegedly placed on the road during pipeline work.

While the exact legal responsibility for each accident will depend on the findings of the police and other competent authorities, the close timing of these incidents has intensified public concern about the condition of roads, work-zone safety, and the management of infrastructure projects.

Beyond Individual Accidents

These incidents should not be viewed only as isolated tragedies. They also raise broader public-interest questions:

  • Were all roadworks carried out with adequate barricades, warning signs, reflective markers, and night-time safety measures?
  • Were dangerous stretches identified and repaired in time?
  • Were contractors complying with contractual safety obligations?
  • Were municipal inspections conducted and documented?
  • Have recurring complaints about road conditions or work-zone hazards been addressed?

These are questions that deserve answers based on official records rather than speculation.

Public Money and Public Accountability

Road construction and maintenance involve significant public expenditure. Citizens are therefore entitled to expect that roads remain reasonably safe and that any excavation or utility work is managed with appropriate safeguards.

If contracts were awarded, payments released, and completion certificates issued, the corresponding records—including work orders, measurement books, quality-control reports, inspection reports, and safety audits—should be available for public scrutiny where permitted by law.

Transparency is essential not only to identify shortcomings but also to strengthen confidence in public administration.

The Need for an Independent Inquiry

Given the loss of three lives within such a short period, there is a strong public-interest case for an independent technical review of the accident locations. Such an inquiry should examine:

  • Road engineering conditions.
  • Maintenance history.
  • Safety arrangements at active work sites.
  • Compliance with applicable standards.
  • The role of contractors, supervising engineers, and relevant public authorities, if any deficiencies are found.

A thorough inquiry would help determine whether these tragedies resulted solely from individual circumstances or whether any systemic failures contributed.

EX7 News View

Every road accident represents a profound human loss. When several fatal incidents occur within a short period, they also become a matter of governance and public policy.

Any conclusions regarding negligence or legal liability must rest on evidence established through official investigation. At the same time, public authorities should respond promptly by preserving records, cooperating with inquiries, conducting safety audits, and addressing any hazards identified.

Infrastructure is not measured only by kilometres of roads constructed—it is measured by whether citizens can travel on those roads safely. Ensuring that public works are executed with proper safety standards, effective supervision, and accountability is fundamental to protecting human life.

Public interest requires transparency. Accountability requires evidence. Every life lost deserves a fair, independent, and fact-based investigation.
